UK and Indian citizens can both apply for Global Entry, but each country adds a step before the interview. The UK adds a GOV.UK background check and an access code. India adds Government of India vetting that CBP says takes 6 months to 2 years.
Both countries are on CBP's list of international arrangements, alongside Canada, Germany, Japan, Singapore and others. The interview comes after conditional approval in both cases, so the main job is getting the order right.
UK citizens: GOV.UK check, then the access code
The UK sequence on CBP's page runs in this order:
- Apply for the background check on GOV.UK and pay the local fee.
- Wait for approval. The UK Access Code is issued only after the check is completed and approved.
- Submit the Global Entry application on the Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) website, pay the non-refundable processing fee and enter the access code.
The order matters because the code does not exist until the GOV.UK step is finished, and the TTP application asks for it. CBP's country pages list no fee amounts, so check the current figures before you pay.
Indian citizens: Government of India vetting
For Indian citizens, CBP lists the Passport Seva Portal as the background-process step. It says the Government of India vetting may take 6 months to 2 years, and that approval can be delayed by up to 2 years.
CBP's advice if you do not live in India: wait to submit your application until shortly before your next trip to India, to avoid further delays.
The wait does not eat into your membership. The 5-year term starts on the approval date, so a long vetting period costs you time, not coverage.
When to book the interview
For both UK and Indian citizens, CBP says to schedule the interview only after conditional approval. Track your status on the TTP dashboard, which shows pending, conditionally approved or denied.
Once you are conditionally approved, you have two routes:
- Enrollment center. Book an interview appointment at a center. Our list of monitored enrollment centers is a starting point, and the live wait board shows current availability.
- Enrollment on Arrival. Do the interview when you enter the U.S. from abroad. No appointment is needed.
If you are travelling to the U.S. soon after approval, Enrollment on Arrival can skip the appointment hunt entirely. If you are already in the U.S., an enrollment center is the route. Booking before conditional approval is not part of the CBP sequence for either country.
Deadlines and renewal
CBP's UK and Indian country pages give no fixed interview window that we can point to. Check your TTP dashboard and any messages from CBP after conditional approval for the dates that apply to you.
The only day-count on those pages concerns renewal. Membership runs five years, and you can submit a renewal up to 364 days before expiry.
What to bring
CBP's country pages say to bring your passport and a photo ID showing your current residence address. A CBP officer asks questions and collects a photo and fingerprints (if applicable).
Indian citizens also need a valid passport and valid visa for border use, and should keep passport details current in the TTP dashboard.
After the interview, CBP posts the final decision on the dashboard. For UK citizens, benefits begin immediately on approval.
The short version
- UK: GOV.UK check, then TTP application with the access code, then conditional approval, then interview.
- India: Passport Seva Portal step and Government of India vetting, with the application timed shortly before a trip to India if you live elsewhere.
- Both: book the interview only after conditional approval, at an enrollment center or through Enrollment on Arrival.
If you go the enrollment center route, free browser alerts can tell you when an interview appointment opens up. Nothing here promises an approval or a timeline, and CBP's own pages remain the final word.
