A new passport means a new passport number, and your Trusted Traveler account will not find out on its own. Update three fields in your TTP account before your next flight: passport number, issue date and expiration date. Press coverage says skipping this can cause check-in problems and identity-verification delays.
The three fields to update
Reporting from Cronista says these three passport details must be changed for programs such as Global Entry, NEXUS and SENTRI:
- Passport number
- Issue date
- Expiration date
Do all three. Updating only the number leaves the account describing a document that no longer matches the one in your bag.
Why the old passport number stops working
The passport number belongs to the document, not to you. Each renewal or replacement produces a new document with a new number. Cronista reports the State Department confirmed that the number on the new passport differs from the old one.
Your TTP account still lists the old number until you change it. The same coverage says TSA can block boarding when document details do not match the airline's records.
You may also see headlines saying the State Department confirmed that Global Entry and PreCheck stop working. That claim comes from secondary coverage. Treat it as reported, not as an official statement.
How to update your passport in the TTP account
A State Department travel page says you can update passport details online through your TTP account. Membership stays valid even if the passport expires, but you have to renew the passport and update the account to keep using the benefits.
- Go to the DHS Trusted Traveler Programs portal and log in.
- Choose the option to update documents.
- Enter the new passport number, issue date and expiration date exactly as printed in the new passport.
- Save the change and keep any confirmation the site gives you.
If the portal asks for anything beyond the three fields, follow the portal.
Check the KTN and passport details on your booking
Press coverage ties the boarding problem to a mismatch with the airline's records, so it is worth comparing before you travel. Open your booking and check two things:
- The Known Traveler Number (KTN) matches the one on your Trusted Traveler membership.
- Any passport number, issue date and expiration date stored in the reservation or the airline's traveler profile match the new passport.
Where these fields live differs by airline, and we have not verified the steps for any of them. Look in the traveler details or profile section, and ask the airline if you cannot find them.
What is not confirmed
We could not read the official CBP, DHS or TSA guidance on this, beyond the portal where the update is made. Fees, interview appointment requirements and the exact way an old number causes trouble are unconfirmed. The coverage we reviewed also does not list specific symptoms, so there is no confirmed checklist of error messages. For general program questions, the Global Entry guide library is a reasonable next stop.
The short version: renew the passport, update the three fields in your TTP account, then check the airline booking.
